Depressed Or Depression?
Like, is there even a difference between depressed or depression?
Turns out there is!
Generally of course, both related to feeling sad
However, many people mistake the feelings of feeling depressed as depression and vice versa
And there is a key difference
So let’s learn about it today
Depressed versus Depression
You see, both depressed and depression relate to someone in a state of unhappiness and in a low mood
Now a key difference is that depression is more severe feelings of sadness and really low mood or spirits
Now this is where the problem lies
How low is low?
That’s why many people get confused between depressed and depression
So to have a clearer picture
To feel depressed is to be in a state of low mood and sadness for a short period of time, ie for a couple of hours
To be in depression is to be in a severe state of low mood and sadness for a longer period of time, ie at least 2 weeks (according to DSM 5)
So if you felt sad cause your dad just passed away, for the duration of the funeral of 5 days, that’s feeling depressed and considered normal cause you need time to grieve
But if your dad passed away 2 years ago and you still have not gotten over the grieving process, then that does suggest you might be in depression and can consider seeking help to resolve it
So What Can I Do To Help Myself?
Regardless whether you are just feeling depressed for a short period or whether you are in depression for the long run
You can definitely do some of these things to help yourself and feel better
- Keep a gratitude journal
- Write at least 3 things you are grateful for everyday
- Exercise
- Start small, maybe 10 to 15 minutes every day
- Sleep well
- At least 7 or 8 hours of sleep, and also, no caffeine at night if that keeps you awake
- Eat healthily
- Having proper food helps, like eating salmon or avocado, instead of sweets or cotton candy
- Watch a movie
- Preferably one of your interest, action, comedy, romance etc
Now these 5 things may not necessarily cure you from your issues but they can help you feel better and help you manage better
